Yellowjackets surge to the front at HOL Track and Field

For the third straight year, the Perham girls track and field team ran away with the Heart O’Lakes Conference Championship when they secured another dominant performance on May 14 in Hawley.

The Yellowjackets continued to add to their impressive season with 68 point victory over the field. Perham finished with 168 points, while Thief River Falls was second with 100 points. Frazee was third with 73 points and Barnesville was fourth with 63 points. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton rounded out the top five.

The Yellowjackets have found themselves out in front during the big meets and that was the case in Hawley. It was a perfect tune-up for the Yellowjackets, who will now compete in the Class AA True Team Championships on May 18 in Stillwater.

While Perham didn’t have many individual wins, they had several performances that had them near the top of the field.

It was the field events that provided the two individual wins for Perham. Ashley Hokanson won in the pole vault, Lizzy LaFond won in triple jump, Mesa Schultz in the long jump, Maggie Ingebrand in the shot put and Tayler Parks in the discus.

Hokanson cleared 11 feet, six inches for the pole vault win. Perham captured the top three spots with Shalie Lipp in second and Mackenzie Rohloff in third.

Schultz finished with a jump of 16 feet, five inches for first in the long jump, while LaFond had a leap of 33 feet, four inches in the triple jump. Maggie Ingebrand finished with a toss of 38 feet, one inch in the shot put and Tayler Parks won the discus with a throw of 98 feet, nine inches, besting teammate Samantha Charoneau for first by an inch.

Liz Birkeland and Abby Tweeton earned a pair of third place finishes in the 1600m run and the 3200m run, respectively. Birkeland had a time of five minutes and 36.60 seconds, while Tweeton came in at 12:44.79.

Along with her win in the field, Schultz captured second place honors in the 200m dash with a time of 26.76.

Perham’s 1600m relay came in with a time of 4:11.66 for second place, while the 3200m relay team came in at 10:16.22 for third place.

The Yellowjackets will now compete at the Class AA True Team Championships on May 18.
