While the meet is a nice win for the Yellowjackets, it’s more of a qualifying meet for the Class A Championships and the Yellowjackets will be able to make a statement with the amount of athletes competing at the Class A Championships.

Ashley Hokanson returns to defend her Class A title in the pole vault. She will be joined by teammate, Shalie Lipp. The duo finished one and two in the pole vault. Caitlin Covington advanced in the 1600 meter run, while Liz Birkeland advanced in the 3200m run. Mesa Schultz advanced in the long jump for Perham.

The Yellowjackets qualified three relay teams for state when the 400, 800 and 3200m relay teams earned a spot at the championships.

Hokanson set a new section record with her winning vault when she cleared 12 feet. Lipp finished in second place with a vault of 10 feet, six inches. The Yellowjackets will have big opportunities for team points with Hokanson and Lipp at the Class A Championships.

Schultz will compete in the long jump for the second straight year. She finished with a jump of 17 feet, three inches for second place in the section.

Covington finished second in the 1600m run with a time of five minutes and 24.07 seconds and will close out a storied high school running career at state. Birkeland advanced in the 3200m run with a time of 12:27.85. Birkeland finished second overall.

The team of Lipp, Lizzy LaFond, Willow Thiel and Schultz earned a trip to state with a time of 51.29 seconds in the 400m relay. The Yellowjackets finished second in the event.
