Perham volleyball takes two at SW Minnesota Challenge

Perham volleyball head coach Eryn Moser has said they won’t shy away from competition. Her Yellowjackets competed in one of the state’s toughest volleyball tournaments when they went 2-3 overall at the Southwest Minnesota Challenge in Marshall, Minn., on Sept. 7 and 8.

The Yellowjackets dropped their first three matches of the tournament, but responded with victories over Owatonna and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton, closing out the tournament. The victories improve the Yellowjackets season mark to 3-5 overall as they get ready for a contest with Frazee at the new Hive on Sept. 13.

Perham rebounded with a 25-15 and 25-16 win over Owatonna on the second day of the tournament. Bradlynn Gniffke finished with seven kills, while Stella Raser added five. Gracie DeBoer and Lily DeBoer had three kills each in the win.

Allie King finished with 11 set assists, while Lily DeBoer ended with 12.

Perham’s roll continued in its 25-14 and 25-14 victory over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton. Gniffke finished with four kills while Lily DeBoer added three. King had seven set assists while DeBoer added six in the win.

The final day of the tournament started with a tough three-set defeat to Fergus Falls. The Otters edged out Perham 26-24, 27-29 and 15-10. DeBoer had eight kills, while Laura Alstadt added seven. Gniffke finished with six in the loss.

The Yellowjackets return home to take on the Frazee Hornets at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 13 at the Hive at the Perham High School gymnasium.

 Groth is a Minnesota Newspaper Association award-winning Sports Editor of the Perham Focus and the Wadena Pioneer Journal.
