The fifth-ranked Perham wrestling team was put to the test during their season opener when they traveled to St. Michael-Albertville on Dec. 2 for an opening tournament. The Yellowjackets finished third overall out of eight teams in a hotly contested field.
Perennial power St. Michael-Albertville came away with the team title with 210.5 points, while Forest Lake was second with 209.5 points. Perham finished third with 195 points. Waconia and St. Cloud Tech rounded out the top five of the event.
The Yellowjackets had three first place finishes, two runner-up finishes and a four third place finishes individually on their way to the third place team finish. The season opening tournament was a stern test for the Yellowjackets.
Jack Fudge took the crown at 138, while Zach Peterson was victorious at 182 and Ty Moser earned top honors at 220. Blaze Brady finished second at 106, while Gabe Bellefeuille came in second at 126. Dylan Johnson came in third at 113, Owen Werner was third at 120, Dylan Fudge came in third at 152 and Dawson Kellogg was third at 195.
Jack Fudge came through with a pair of pins in the quarterfinals and the semifinals. He defeated Dawson Weleski at the two minute and 40 second mark in the quarterfinals. He followed it with a pin at 1:19 in the semifinals against Dylan Hanson. He earned an overtime victory over Prestin Bradley, 8-4.
Peterson rolled to the finals with a fall win over Logan Hanson and a 13-2 major decision win over Gabe Anderson in the semifinals. He ended with an 11-7 victory over Forest Lake’s Grant Parrish in the finals at 182.
Ty Moser cruised to the title at 220. He defeated Dylan Mills by an 11-2 major decision. He followed with a 15-5 major decision win over Jake Hawkins in the finals.
Blaze Brady went 2-1 on the day, falling to Tyson Peitz in the finals of the 106 division. He was pinned at 1:01 on his way to the second place finish. Gabe Bellefeuille posted a 2-1 record as well at 126. He was defeated in overtime by Nathan Nygaard in the championship match.
Dylan Johnson posted a 2-1 mark on the day en route to his third place finish at 113. He defeated Andrew Wollak in the third place match by fall at 5:39. Owen Werner went 3-1 on the day. He defeated Max Amann in the third place match in overtime by a 7-5 decision. He opened with a first round win before falling in the semifinals. Dylan Fudge closed the day with a 9-4 decision victory over Dallas Hooper for third place. He posted a 3-1 mark on the afternoon. Dawson Kellogg went 3-1 at 195, ending the day with a 7-0 decision win over Pedro Castillo.
Perham’s Noah Rooney finished the day with a 1-3 mark at 132, he finished sixth overall. Leighton Rach went 2-2 at 145, finishing fourth overall. Wyatt Guck posted a 2-2 mark and finished fifth, earning a fall win over Nick Rogers at 4:57 in the 160 division. Colton Hackel posted an 0-2 mark at 170, while Colton Kostynick went 0-2 at 285. Gareth Covington finished with an 0-2 mark at 120 as well.
The Yellowjackets returnhome for a dual meet with Moorhead on Dec. 5.
