Perham’s Dawson Kellogg and Jack Fudge reached the podium at the 2020 Minnesota State High School League Class AA Championships at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul on Feb. 29.
Kellogg’s senior year and high school wrestling career ended in the Class AA Championship match at 195.
Kellogg jumped ahead 2-0 against Mankato East’s Kolin Baier in the first period with an early take down. Baier was able to escape and trailed 2-1 when the period came to a close. Kellogg chose down for the second period and got a quick escape and was able to maintain a 3-1 lead heading into the final period.
Baier escaped early in the third, setting up a dramatic finish between the two wrestlers, who entered with three combined losses on the season. With the two wrestlers locked up on the edge of the mat, Baier was able to pull Kellogg down and turn him for a takedown, which he turned into the match ending pin at the 5:24 mark of the Class AA Championship at 195.
Kellogg finished his strong career with three placewinning finishes at the Class AA Championships and a 31-4 record in his senior year.
He advanced to the finals with a 5-2 decision win over Monticello’s Jesse Midas in the semifinals. It was a scoreless first period between the two, but Midas grabbed the lead in the second with an escape. Kellogg took control of the match in the third period. He gained an escape to tie the match at one, then took Midas down and gained two near fall points for the 5-1 win.
During the first day of the tournament, Kellogg advanced with a pair of fall victories. He defeated Tri-City United’s Jose Reyes by fall at the 3:02 mark. He followed up with an enthusiastic victory over Orono’s David Wilfert. He pinned Wilfert at the 2:21 mark to advance to the second day where he competed in the semifinals and finals.
Fudge suffered a tough break in the semifinals against Payton Anderson of Fairmont-County West. Fudge had a 3-2 lead in the third period but was called for a penalty, allowing Anderson to tie it up and send it to overtime. Fudge and Anderson dueled on the mat and Fudge tried to turn Anderson, but Anderson was able to stay on top and get the takedown and the near fall for a 7-3 victory in overtime.
Fudge responded to his tough loss in the semifinals to defeat Mahtomedi’s Reid Lawrence by an 8-0 major decision, advancing to the third place match.
Fudge finished his season with a pin at the 3:35 mark of his match with Plainview-Elgin-Millville’s Joe Stucky. Fudge finished his junior campaign with a record of 39-3 overall.
Fudge began his tournament with a fall victory Marshall’s Noah Jensen at the 3:29 mark of the first round at 152.
It was a battle in the quarterfinals for Fudge against Hutchinson’s Cale Luthens. Fudge found himself trailing 1-0 after two periods when Luthens earned an escape in the second. However, Fudge quickly got an escape in the third period and neither wrestler could get a takedown in the final period.
However, Fudge was the aggressor much of the match and it paid off in the first period of overtime. He quickly got the takedown of Luthens and earned the 3-1 sudden victory win sending him into the semifinals.
Lorentz, Ramos compete at Class AA Championships
Perham’s Aaron Lorentz was defeated in the first round by Big Lake’s Nolan Reiter by an 11-4 decision. Lorentz earned a wrestleback match after Reiter earned a 7-2 decision win over Luke Knudsen.
However, it was Knudsen, who would pick up the victory over Lorentz in the first round of the wrestlebacks. Knudsen defeated Lorentz by an 8-6 decision. Lorentz finished the 2019-20 season with a record of 30-10 overall. Knudsen battled back and finished in the fifth place match, where he was defeated by Reiter for a second time.
Brian Ramos was defeated by Brody Rud of Tri-City United in the first round by a major decision 11-2. Ramos was battling a leg injury heading into the contest and appeared to aggravate it during the first period. Rud was able to be aggressive and earned the 11-2 victory over Ramos. Ramos finished the season with a 32-6 mark overall. Rud suffered a loss to Simley’s Gavin Nelson and competed in the the wrestlebacks after the quarterfinal loss.
