The Perham/New York Mills swimming and diving team continues to show improvement as they get ready for a pair of big meets in the upcoming weeks. While they were defeated by Moorhead, 105-77, on Oct. 3, they continue to drop time and set personal records.

“The Yellowjackets swam a fantastic meet in Moorhead,” Perham/NYM head coach Jensen Maiden said. “Many of the girls truly pushed themselves to the limits and their times reflected their hard work and determination.”

Maiden said the team cut 73.4 seconds from their overall time and had 25 new personal best swims in the meet.

One of the new personal records came in a first place finish by senior Megan Tellinghuisen. She finished first in the 200 freestyle with a winning time of two minutes, 14.19 seconds. Olivea McDonald and Maggie Ingebrand set personal records in the same race as well, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively.

Tellinghuisen followed with a strong performance in the 400 freestyle relay. She helped the Yellowjackets make up ground in the final race. Tellinghuisen out-touched the Moorhead swimmer at the wall, securing the first place finish. The team of Irene Mursu, Anna Carlson, Dixie Carow and Tellinghuisen ended the race with a time of 4:12.23.

The Yellowjacket 200 freestyle relay team finished second overall, but first for points scoring due to Moorhead swimming the event in exhibition. The team of Carlson, Emily Martinson, McDonald and Tellinghuisen finished with a time of 1:53.59.

The Yellowjacket divers had a strong showing as well. Dena Fischer finished first, recording a score of 192.00. She was followed closely by Anni Kovar, who finished second. Kovar ended her routine with a score of 167.55.

It was a strong showing for the Yellowjackets ahead of their invitational in Grand Rapids. The Grand Rapids Invitational usually brings some powerhouse teams to the Robert J. Elkington Middle School Pool.

“All in all, the Yellowjackets had another spectacular meet with some incredible races,” Maiden said. “(After Grand Rapids) we get a whole week off to do some intense conditioning work to get ready for True Team Sections in Detroit Lakes.”

The Yellowjackets will be competing in Grand Rapids on Oct. 5, before True Team Sections which is on Oct. 14 in Detroit Lakes.
