The Perham/New York Mills girls swimming and diving team set several personal records during their meet with Park Rapids Area on Sept. 24 in Park Rapids.
The Yellowjackets were defeated 103-66 but posted seven season personal records and 23 all-time personal records during the meet.
“The girls had a really exciting meet in Park Rapids,” Perham/NYM head coach Jensen Maiden said. “Historically, Park Rapids is a great meet for us, as we round the corner of the mid-season slump. This year’s meet did not disappoint.”

Maiden said almost every single swimmer set at least one personal record in the meet. The Yellowjackets had two more members qualify for sections. Taylor Ziemke hit the qualifying time in the 500 freestyle, while Irene Mursu qualified in the 100 butterfly. It’s the eighth individual event for Mursu to qualify in. It’s the third year that Mursu has done that during her swimming career.
The Yellowjackets kicked off the meet by setting a new middle school record. The team of Molly Meyer, Katelyn Kratzke, Ziemke and Elle McDonald set the new mark at two minutes and 20.04 seconds in the 200 medley relay. The record was previously set by Megan Shipman, Leah Richter, Abby Kratzke and Katie Formanek in 2004.
Lucy Schultz picked up a first place finish in the 100 backstroke at 1:23.38, while Shanetta Reitmeyer came in first in the 100 breaststroke at 1:28.14. The 400 freestyle relay team of Kaydi Mursu, Josi Mindermann, Kratzke and Schultz came in first with a time of 5:00.25. Park Rapids Area swam the final events in exhibition, not recording points towards the team score.
Brittney Lorentz picked up a win on the diving board. She finished first with 212.55 points.
Irene Mursu finished second in the 200 individual medley at 2:31.43. Elle McDonald earned a second place finish in the 100 backstroke at 1:24.34, while Lucie Meyer was second at 1:38.97 in the 100 breaststroke.
The Yellowjackets have just two meets remaining on the season.

“These girls are working really hard and seeing that hard work pay off,” Maiden said. “We hope to add a few more girls to the section team.”
The Yellowjackets are back in swimming action when they compete with Detroit Lakes at the Detroit Lakes Community and Culture Center on Sept. 29 at 6 p.m.
