Perham-The Perham Yellowjacket boys basketball team hoped to upend the Hawley Nuggets on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at the Prairie Wind Middle School gymnasium. For most of the first half and the early part of the second, it appeared that would happen. However, the Nuggets closed the second half on a 21-4 run, erasing the first half deficit in earning a 50-39 victory over the Yellowjackets. “I thought our kids came ready to play with a high level of intensity for most of the game,” Perham Head Coach Dave Cresap said. “They got us a little tired. Their big, physical bodies wore us down a bit. I couldn’t be happier. All I asked the kids tonight was to come to the gym, rebound, and play defense. We did all that, and I’m very proud of them.” The Yellowjackets hit five 3-pointers in the first half. The outside shooting along with their ability to control the glass, enabled them to hold an eight-point edge at the half, 26-18. “I thought we did a great job for most of the night. Ben Ellefson took over for a bit in the second half. He is a big body to move around,” Cresap said. “Our kids didn’t back down. We missed open shots in the second half that we made in the first. We got a little tired and shots ended up short. It was a great effort by our kids.” The Nuggets switched to a zone defense in the second half, using their height and size to wear down the Yellowjackets. “We were able to force them to go zone because they couldn’t play us man-to-man anymore,” Cresap said. “Because we were going to get whatever shot we wanted man-to-man. They did exactly what our game plan was. They went zone and that stymied us a little bit because of their length. We had to shoot some deep 3’s. Christian Weis had three open 3’s and they just didn’t go in. That’s all we can ask for is shots and to just keep getting better.” Ben Ellefson, spent much of the first half on the bench due to foul trouble, scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the second half.
“He (Ellefson) is a good player. He had 40 against Moorhead and for us to give up what we did tonight, I’m not disappointed,” Cresap said. “We had AJ Johnson on him and he battled. We had Sam Muer on him and he battled. We were bouncing around in there but we never backed down and that’s all you can ask from this young team.” Jenson Beachy and Hawley’s Dillon Omberg started the game exchanging 3-pointers, however, Hawley scored eight straight to lead, 8-3. Jaden Anderson quickly ended that run with a 3-pointer of his own. That closed the gap to two. Later in the half, Aaron Regnier gave the Nuggets a 15-14 lead. The Nuggets went cold against the Perham defense and the Yellowjacket offense benefited. The Yellowjackets went on a 12-0 run to take a 26-15 lead. Zack Tellinghuisen and Beachy hit 3-pointers during the run. Beachy contributed seven points during the run with a pair of a free-throws and a lay-up. AJ Johnson hit a jumper inside as well. Harms and Ellefson quickly made their presence felt in the second half, opening with back-to-back baskets. Perham answered with a 3-pointer from Beachy and a jumper from Anderson to stem the Nugget momentum. Harms spent much of the first half in foul trouble as well. He finished the game with 13 points. It was Harms that kicked off a 13-0 run in the second half by hitting two free throws. Dawson Tusow added two points during the run, while Ellefson contributed five. He hit a basket inside to give Hawley the lead for good and followed that up with a 3-pointer to extend the lead. Sam Muer countered for Perham and snapped the 13-0 run with a drive to the hoop. However, it was too much Ellefson down the stretch. The Nuggets closed the game out scoring 10 of the final 12 points.
