Yellowjackets finish seventh at Moose Invitational

The Perham Yellowjacket tennis team is no stranger to traveling on the road, starting the 2016 season. The Yellowjackets have had just one home meet, which featured three matches. The Yellowjackets continued their road string with the Moose Invitational on Sept. 10 in Brainerd, Minn.

The Yellowjackets finished sixth overall in the tournament. They recorded 13 points. Brainerd won the tournament with 25 points. Roseau was second, while New Prague was third. Big Lake came in fourth, while Pequot Lakes rounded out the top five.

The Yellowjackets earned a runner up finish at No. 3 singles with Brianna Schwantz and a third place finish with Josie Beachy at No. 1 singles.

The competitors were placed in pools with the winners of each pool squaring off in the finals. Other matches were determined on records as well. Schwantz went 3-0 in pool play, disposing of Glencoe-Silver Lake, 6-3, 6-3, Big Lake, 7-5, 6-4 and Pequot Lakes, 6-2, 6-2. Schwantz moved into the finals where she went against Brainerd. She was defeated in two sets, 3-6, 4-6.

Beachy went 2-1 in pool play, earning wins over Parkers Prairie, 6-4, 6-4, and Glencoe-Silver Lake, 6-3, 6-4. Her lone loss was to Brainerd in pool play, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2. She bounced back in the third place match with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, victory over New Prague in the championship round.

Makayla Melvin earned a fourth place finish overall. Melvin was victorious against Roseau, 6-2, 6-3, and Parkers Prairie, 6-2, 6-2, while falling to Big Lake, 2-6, 2-6. She was defeated in the third place game, 3-6, 4-6.

Swyter finished 3-1 overall at No. 4 singles, earning fifth place overall. She defeated Glencoe-Silver Lake, 3-6, 7-5 (10-3), before falling to Pequot Lakes, 5-7, 3-6. She closed out round-robin play with a 6-4, 5-7, (6-10), victory over Roseau. In the fifth place match, she defeated Big Lake in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

The first doubles team of Mallory Weber and Elle Birkeland ran into stiff competition, finishing eighth overall. They were defeated by Brainerd, 3-6, 2-6, Pequot Lakes, 2-6, 4-6, and Big Lake, 2-6, 6-2 (4-10). They were closed out by Parkers Prairie, 3-6, 6-3 (3-10).

The duo of Avery Beachy and Kiera Radniecki earned seventh place honors when they defeated Glencoe-Silver Lake, 7-5, 6-3, in the championship round. They were defeated by New Prague, 2-6, 2-6, Brainerd, 2-6, 5-7, and Big Lake, 2-6, 2-6, in round robin action.

The Yellowjackets used a mixture of Jade Lenius, Johanna Winkels and Mirta Vorderbruggen at No. 3 doubles. They earned seventh place honors, defeating Parkers Prairie, 6-2, 2-6 (10-2) in the championship round. They were defeated by Brainerd, 4-6, 3-6, Roseau, 2-6, 2-6 and Pequot Lakes, 2-6, 2-6, in the round robin portion of the tournament.
