Yellowjackets get key road win over Breckenridge

The Perham Yellowjackets held off a surging Derek Dahlgren and the Breckenridge Cowboys, picking up a 75-70 victory over their Heart O'Lakes Conference rivals on Dec. 8 in Breckenridge.

The Perham Yellowjackets held off a surging Derek Dahlgren and the Breckenridge Cowboys, picking up a 75-70 victory over their Heart O’Lakes Conference rivals on Dec. 8 in Breckenridge.

The victory gives the Yellowjackets the early edge in the Heart O’Lakes Conference Standings and sets up what should be an exciting rematch when the two teams meet again in February in Perham.

The Yellowjackets used a balanced scoring attack with five players in double figures. Jenson Beachy finished with 19 points. He finished with 12 points in the second half, hitting all six of his free throws in the game. John LaFond finished with 15 points, 11 of them coming in the second half, while Martin LaFond added 14 points. Josh Jeziorski and Carter Cresap finished with 12 points each in the win.

The Yellowjackets led by a pair at the break and were able to slowly stretch the lead to double figures in the second half. They lead by 12 with just over three minutes to go, but clawed back behind the outside shooting of Dahlgren in the final minutes. Dahlgren finished with 27 points, 19 of them in the second half. He hit five 3-pointers during the run, cutting the Perham lead to three, 73-70. However, the Yellowjackets were able to close it out at the line, picking up the 75-70 victory.

Noah Christensen added 27 points. He had 20 at the break, but fouled out in the second half.  The Yellowjackets 14 of their 17 free throws and connected on seven 3-pointers in the win. The Cowboys hit 10 3-pointers and were 14 of 16 at the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets improve to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the HOL. Breckenridge falls to 1-2 overall on the season and 0-2 in the HOL.

Perham returns to action on Dec. 9 when they travel to Hopkins to take part in the annual Breakdown Tip-Off Classic. They are playing in one of 17 games to take place at Hopkins. Perham will take on Breck at 10:30 a.m.
