Yellowjackets victorious at Barnesville; Mallory Belka medals

Perham, Belka, take top team and individual spots in season opener.


The Perham Yellowjackets girls golf team was victorious in its season opener at a Heart of Lakes Conference meeting in Barnesville on Thursday, April 22, with a score of 185. Perham's Mallory Belka was the top medalist in the meet with an individual score of 36.5.

Even with the win, Perham head coach Cory Solberg said the team score wasn't what the team wanted, "but we will use that to motivate us."

Perham won the meet by four strokes. Hawley took second with a score of 189, and Barnesville rounded out the top three with a team score of 208.

Four Perham golfers finished in the top 10. In addition to Belka's first-place finish with a score of 36.5. Perham's Lexi Kunza placed fourth, scoring a 47, Rylee Hunt took sixth with a score of 49.5, and Hope Rosen tied for ninth with a score of 52. In their first varsity events, Addison Zimmerman finished with a 56, and Aubry Zimmerman finished with a 57.5.

Solberg said the team had a few nerves to start the first meet of the season, "but after a few holes, everyone settled in pretty good." He added that even though there are improvements the team wants to make, there were a lot of positives on the day.


"Mallory played extremely well for our first time out," he said. "She really played smart and stayed true to her game so that was really exciting. Everyone had a few challenges to overcome and we will use that to get better."

The Yellowjackets' next meet is 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, at Frazee Golf Couse.
