The Honor Flight will take about 90 veterans from World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars to Washington, D. C.
On a cold and blustery Saturday, about a dozen Detroit Lakes area residents placed wreaths on the flag poles at Veterans Memorial Park in Detroit Lakes as part of Wreaths Across America on Dec. 17.
This year’s topic was, “Why is the Veteran Important?”
Chubb Germolus and Richard Quistorff, two Perham-area veterans, shared stories of their service and what Veterans Day means to them.

United Community Bank of Perham and Frazee presented a check to David Brunsvold from Veterans Honor Flight on Thursday, Nov. 3.
Wadena-area resident Paul Sailer, who has written two books about World War II aviation history, will be at the Detroit Lakes Public Library on Wednesday, Nov. 9 for a 10:30 a.m. presentation about his books, his own experiences as a Vietnam War helicopter pilot, and how those experiences inform his writing. This presentation in honor of Veteran's Day is free and open to the public.
“This memorial stands in symbolic defense of not only our Capitol, but also the state and nation," Kraemer said.
Minnesota 96-year-old Arnold "Buck" J. Zahratka told reporters that he was amazed by the commendation and reflected on his service in the U.S. Army during the pivotal battle.
On Saturday, Dec. 4, friends and family of Lucas Schmitz gathered at his new Homes for Our Troops customized home to watch as he and his wife and kids were presented the key to their new lives.
Dr. Thomas Seaworth, who lives in Detroit Lakes and currently practices at Perham Health's New York Mills clinic, has been awarded the prestigious SSgt. Andrew P. Nelson Award for Outstanding Leadership and Service.

A Perham native and special education teacher at Perham Public Schools, Schmitz said he was feeling grateful, overwhelmed and wishful that the attention wasn’t on him as his family received an adapted home from Homes for Our Troops. The organization donates custom-built homes to injured post-9/11 veterans; 322 homes had been built nationwide as of October 2021.
