HAWLEY – The Perham High girls track team notched another impressive win scoring 143 points to take first place by more than 50 points at the United Clay-Becker Track & Field Meet held at the Dale Skallerud Athletic Complex on April 27. Park Christian finished a distant second with 90 points and third place Pelican Rapids had 87 points in the 14-team field.
The Yellowjackets boys track team finished third in the meet, scoring 90 points to trail first-place Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton with 131.5 points and second-place United Clay-Becker with 121 points.
Track coach Mike Peterson said he was pleased with the teams’ results, as they were running shorthanded. He said four of the teams’ best athletes who qualified for the Hamline Elite Meet to be held the next day on April 28 in the Twin Cities were held out of the Hawley competition.
“We had a very good night,” he said. “The rest of our team responded well and ran some of their best times of the year in cold weather.”
The Yellowjacket girls were led by several athletes who placed in multiple events including eighth-grader Addi Hackel who placed fourth in pole vault with a vault of 8 feet, 6 inches, seventh in the triple jump with a jump of 30 feet, 9.75 inches and eighth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.65 seconds. She also helped the 4x200-meter relay team to a fifth-place finish.

Sophomore Cora Grismer placed first in the 300-meter hurdles in 50.97 seconds and third in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.4 seconds. She also helped the 4x400-meter relay team to a fourth-place finish.
Junior Kennedy Pilgrim took third place in the long jump with a jump of 15 feet, helped the 4x100-meter relay team to a third-place finish, and also participated in the 4x200-meter relay team’s fifth-place finish.
Freshman Caidyn Breid finished second in the 800 meters in 2:36.6, and helped the 4x400-meter relay team to a fourth-place finish and the 4x800-meter relay team to first place.
Other top places on the day included eighth-grader Ella Hendrickson who placed second in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:42.5 and Leelou Novotny who placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:37.3.
The Yellowjacket girls also swept the pole vault event with senior Natalie Rooney taking first with a vault of 9 feet, 9 inches, senior Danial Van Watermulen in second with 9 feet, senior Maya Richter in third with 9 feet and Hackel’s fourth-place jump of 8 feet, 6 inches.
The Perham boys were led by freshman Trystan Larson who finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 17.76 seconds, seventh in the pole vault with a vault of 9 feet and eighth in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 46.41.
Other top performers were sophomore Blake Swenson who took first place in the 400-meter dash in a time of 53.50, senior Micah Thompson who took first place in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:03.9, junior Noah Novotny taking first place in the pole vault with a vault of 11 feet and senior Aiden Kennedy who tied him for first with a vault of 11 feet.
Second-place finishes included sophomore Carter Flatau in the 1600-meter run in a time of 4:48.8 and the team’s 4x200-meter relay team which finished in a time of 1:35.7.
