CHICAGO -- Junior guard Amir Coffey scored 12 of his 22 points in overtime to help Minnesota post a 77-72 overtime victory over Penn State on Thursday night, March 14, in the second round of the Big Ten tournament in Chicago. Senior guard Dupree McBrayer added 18 points and senior forward Jordan Murphy had 15 points and 14 rebounds for the seventh-seeded Golden Gophers (20-12). Freshman center Daniel Oturu added 10 points.
SEATTLE — Adam Thielen is now in company with Randy Moss and Cris Carter. With a 10-yard reception in the fourth quarter Monday night at Seattle, the Vikings wide receiver joined Moss and Carter as the only players in team history to have 100 catches in a season. Moss and Carter each did it twice. Carter became the first Minnesota receiver to have 100 in a season since Moss had 111 grabs in 2003. Moss had 106 catches in 2002.
MINNEAPOLIS—Minnesota might be getting a lot of attention for starting a freshman walk-on at quarterback, but Thursday's season opener against New Mexico State showed that its senior running back should receive plenty of attention as well. Rodney Smith showed why he could be one of the Big Ten's most underrated backs this year, as he ran for 153 yards on 24 carries to help lead the Golden Gophers to a 48-10 home win over New Mexico State.
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea - Kikkan Randall and Jessica Diggins delivered the first Olympic cross-country medal for the United States since 1976 with a stunning victory in a thrilling finish to the women's team sprint relay on Wednesday. Diggins held off the challenge of Sweden's Stina Nilsson in a furious sprint for the line to win gold and Norway's Marit Bjoergen became the most successful winter Olympian of all time with 14 medals after taking bronze with Maiken Caspersen Falla. "It feels unreal, I can't believe it just happened," Diggins told reporters.
