The Perham Speech team placed 6th at the 2018 Section 6A tournament in Pillager on Saturday, April 14, and will send two members to the state tournament later this month. Overall 17 competitors took part in the tournament, seven of which qualified for finals (top 6 in each category). The section takes the top 3 in each category to the State A tournament on April 21. Two people are dead after what police are calling homicides in rural Perham. According to a press release from the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the residence at 5:17 a.m. this morning (Tuesday) on a reported assault. The release states that when they arrived, two deceased victims were discovered at the scene. A suspect was located and taken into custody, but the names of the victims and the suspect have not yet been released. Check back for more updates.
The annual Arbor Day observation in the City of Perham has been set for Saturday, May 5, 2018. Residential property owners within city limits may sign up for free boulevard trees at Service Food, Central Market of Perham, and the city office. Sign-ups will be taken now until April 19. All Perham residential property owners are eligible to sign up for trees at no cost. Planting will be done by volunteers on May 5, 2018. Once the trees are in place, property owners will be responsible for watering the trees.
AARP is providing free tax preparation in New York Mills, Perham and Wadena through April. Started in 1968 by four volunteers, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is now the nation's largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation program. AARP volunteers are trained and IRS-certified each year to ensure their knowledge of revisions to the U.S. tax code. With their help, taxpayers received $1.3 billion refunds. By using AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, these low-to moderate-income taxpayers also avoid preparation fees and pitches for high-interest tax credit or refund loans.
The 2018 E.O.T. County Relay for Life kickoff meeting will be held Monday, April 9, at 7:00 p.m., at Calvary Lutheran Church. The 2018 Relay will be held Friday, July 13 at the Perham High School track, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Representatives from teams that have been part of the relay before 2018 should be at the kick off meeting, and representatives from potential new teams should also attend. Also, individuals new to the Relay who want to know more or want to join a team are invited to attend.
The Perham High School Interact Group organized their first walk for hunger that started at the high school and ended at the Bridge Food Pantry. The goal was to raise funds and awareness for the Feeding Backpack program and the food pantry. The community was invited to participate in the walk with Interact, and organizers said in total they had 64 participants.
Perham Speech Team placed second in Underwood for the Subsection 23A competition Friday, March 23. The top six individuals in a category advance to the Section 6A competition held on April 14 in Pillager. Local members of the American Bikers for Awareness Training and Education (A.B.A.T.E.) met with Rep. Mary Franson to talk about motorcycle rights, safety and awareness on March 14 at the capitol in St. Paul. Approximately 300 members of the organization from around the state attended the 13th annual Bikerday at the Minnesota State Capitol event, with about eight from the local Heart of the Lakes A.B.A.T.E. chapter taking part. A.B.A.T.E of Minnesota is a non-profit, grassroots organization whose purpose is to educate motorcyclists and the general public about motorcycling.
Students at Heart of the Lakes Elementary School had had a Beach Picnic Party for earning 3,887 pom-poms as a school. Kids had a picnic lunch with beach theme and fun music last week to celebrate positive behavior in the cafeteria. It was an all school goal to earn 3,000 pom-poms. It is part of the PBIS program. (Positive, Behavior Interventions and Support).
The annual Speech Expo will take place Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Heart of the Lakes Elementary School. Breakfast will be served from 8:30-10:30 a.m. (free will donation) with a silent auction and awards. At the Underwood Junior Speech meet last week, several team members took home awards.
