The Perham/New York Mills girls swimming and diving team returned to the pool with a meet against the Fosston-Bagley Seals in Fosston on Sept. 10.
The Seals were able to prevail in a close contest with the Yellowjackets 47-38. Perham/NYM head coach Jensen Maiden said the team had a blast in the close contest with the Seals.
“For most of the meet, we were neck-and-neck, trading leads,” Maiden said. “This made for a really fun and exciting evening in the pool.”
The team set 19 personal records in the meet, cutting a total of 46.62 seconds. Irene Mursu qualified for sections in two meets, bringing her total to five on the season in just two events. She qualified in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke.
Maiden said despite not having fans at the meet, it was a loud and exciting atmosphere.

“With so many close races, in both junior varsity and varsity, there was a lot of tension and even more excitement,” Maiden said. “Both teams had a lot of fun. We are ready to keep that fun going.”
The Yellowjackets opened with a win in the 200 medley relay behind the swimming of Lucie Meyer, Mursu, Taylor Ziemke and Lucy Schultz. They finished with a time of two minutes and 14.98 seconds.
Mursu followed with a first place finish in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:33.82. Mursu earned another win in the 100 backstroke when she finished with a time of 1:09.86.
Maiden said the team will be putting in a lot of hard work to test their strength and endurance. The Yellowjackets are back in the pool on Sept. 17 when they take on Detroit Lakes at the Detroit Lakes Community Center.
